6.5 Frequent car use and car dependence at a societal and cultural level

In this section we will broaden the spectrum of issues once again. Frequent car use changes something in modern western risk societies. In Chapter 3 we tried to clarify how, because of the convenience and the facilities offered, the car could become a basic asset in modern societies. Cars have made the geographical spread of locations for important activities possible. ‘Vicinity’ or ‘nearness’ is, outside the cities, no longer the standard in daily life. Even in cities there is sometimes a need to travel longer distances to be able to carry out all the wished, expected and necessary activities of daily life. In this section we will look at the social changes connected with frequent car use. We will talk about a double relationship; sometimes car use leads to social change, and sometimes it is the other way around. We will describe the rise of the edge cities, of the edgeless cities, of mobility in the newest modern neighbourhood in the Netherlands. And we will describe hypermobility, giving rise to permanent moves and to daily fluctuations in population composition of locations. Finally we will focus on some cultural orientations.
